My first job shadow, incidentally was as close to a pilot job shadow as would be possible. Even if the FAA said I couldn't shadow a pilot, that didn't deter me from meeting with Capt. Micheal Duguay and talking about his career in aviation. Back when he was my age, he too wanted to be a military pilot. But, there were much stricter vision standards at the time so he was disqualified, and went on to attend Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach, a renowned aeronautical university. To earn his hours and to get his commercial ratings, he became a cargo pilot. After he had his hours built up, he got his job at Delta. He is a few years away from mandatory retirement age, however he still loves his job.
I sat down with Mike in sophomore year. Thinking about myself, where I want to be in the next several years, and who I want to become, I am beginning to rethink being a pilot. Even during the pandemic, where were pilots during the crisis? Well, planes were parked on tarmacs, flights were empty. Im glad that I am beginning to have these questions now rather than later, so that I can figure out exactly what to do in college. Thats why Ive been thinking about mechanical engineering, a career that will always be around. You could say AI is taking over, but whos designing AI computers, machinery and equipment? These are all good thoughts to have now, and not later.
