"The US has been fighting a war on terror, for which there is no end in sight. For whatever
reason, whether it be misunderstandings of leaders or just bad judgement calls, all of these
expenses are paid by those directly on the front line during a war. The nearly 7000 deaths from
2001 to 2018 however are not in vein; the purpose from any military failure or shortcoming is to
study what went wrong and where (Crawford ‘Human Cost of the Post-9/11 Wars: Lethality and
the Need for Transparency,’ 2018). Making mistakes is one thing and analyzing them to improve
is another, which hasn’t been done to the level in order to sustain combat in the Middle East or
pull forces out of the region. The rate of suicide of veterans is another failure, where veterans
have a suicide rate 1.5 times that of the normal American population (Crawford ‘Human Cost of
the Post-9/11 Wars: Lethality and the Need for Transparency,’ 2018). There is much room for
improvement in the strategic planning of this wars and wars to come, and the treatment of
veterans.
I chose to do my Capstone project in order to help veterans who come back, and have
issues getting back to a normal civilian life whether its because they’re injured or are having
metal issues pertaining to combat. My goal was to make sure that veterans have the opportunity
to get a normal life back with their families and have an opportunity to adjust to normal life in a
way that makes the transition easy for them. The Wounded Warrior Project does just that, by
helping veterans and their families who are having difficulty helping their veterans adjust to
normal life. My 5k would raise money which would directly go to the WWP to help vets get
assistance with adjusting such, whether its transport to hospitals for treatment, therapy, or job
placement. The men and women injured in combat entered the military knowing that was
possible, and without hesitation they still sign that contract at their recruiter and salute the flag. I
figure that is the least we can help with, and I was so happy to fundraise for them."
